Use-after-free vulnerability in the HTMLMediaElement::didMoveToNewDocument function in core/html/HTMLMediaElement.cpp in Blink, as used in Google Chrome before 31.0.1650.48, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors involving the movement of a media element between documents.
The weakness was presented 10/07/2013 by Cloudfuzzer as Stable Channel Update as confirmed blog post (Blogspot). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.ch. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6622 since 11/05/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70986 (Debian DSA-2799-1 : chromium-browser - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121689 (Avant Browser Rendering Engines Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 31.0.1650.48 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
