The error-message functionality in Moodle 1.9.x before 1.9.13, 2.0.x before 2.0.4, and 2.1.x before 2.1.1 does not ensure that a continuation link refers to an http or https URL for the local Moodle instance, which might allow attackers to trick users into visiting arbitrary web sites via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 07/16/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4294 since 11/04/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
