Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in the CheckUser extension for MediaWiki allows remote attackers to hijack the authentication of certain users for requests that retrieve sensitive user information via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 03/31/2015 by Bawolff with iSEC Partners (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2940 since 04/07/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82686 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : mediawiki (MDVSA-2015:200)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13127 (Mediawiki Multiple Vulnerabilities (MediaWiki Security Release: 1.19.24, 1.23.9 and 1.24.2)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
