The manipulation as part of a wddx Format Input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in MediaWiki before 1.19.24, 1.2x before 1.23.9, and 1.24.x before 1.24.2, when using HHVM, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an invalid parameter in a wddx format request to api.php, which is not properly handled in an error message, related to unsafe calls to wddx_serialize_value.

The weakness was presented 03/31/2015 by Bawolff with iSEC Partners (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2941 since 04/07/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

By approaching the search of inurl:api.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84164 (MediaWiki < 1.19.24 / 1.23.9 / 1.24.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13127 (Mediawiki Multiple Vulnerabilities (MediaWiki Security Release: 1.19.24, 1.23.9 and 1.24.2)).

Upgrading to version 1.19.24, 1.23.9 or 1.24.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
