dotCMS up to 3.3.0 Content Types _EXT_STRUCTURE_orderBy/_EXT_STRUCTURE_direction sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in dotCMS up to 3.3.0 (Content Management System). This affects some unknown processing of the component Content Types. The manipulation of the argument _EXT_STRUCTURE_orderBy/_EXT_STRUCTURE_direction with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

SQL injection vulnerability in the "Content Types > Content Types" screen in dotCMS before 3.3.1 allows remote authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the orderby parameter.

The weakness was published 10/31/2016 by Elar Lang as Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in dotCMS (8x CVE) as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-8907 since 10/24/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 93 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 3.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
