A vulnerability has been found in LibRaw up to 0.18.10 (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function parse_minolta of the file dcraw/dcraw.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
An error within the "parse_minolta()" function (dcraw/dcraw.c) in LibRaw versions prior to 0.18.11 can be exploited to trigger an infinite loop via a specially crafted file.
The bug was discovered 07/17/2018. The weakness was disclosed 12/07/2018 by Laurent Delosieres with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at usn.ubuntu.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-5813 since 01/19/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 98 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118353 (SUSE SLED12 Security Update : libraw (SUSE-SU-2018:3343-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197322 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libraw Vulnerabilities (USN-3838-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.18.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
