A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Javascript Page Loader. nsHTMLContentSink.cpp in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors involving a "particular sequence of HTML tags" that leads to memory corruption.
The weakness was presented 04/13/2006 by Georgi Guninski (shutdown) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-09 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0749 since 02/17/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21461 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (84630f4a-cd8c-11da-b7b9-000c6ec775d9)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117722 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0328)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16044.
