A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown part of the component CSS Handler. Integer overflow in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5.0.2 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large number in the CSS letter-spacing property that leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 04/13/2006 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint und Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-17 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-1730 since 04/12/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115354 (Mozilla SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16044. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
