A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Upload Dialogbox Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Mozilla Firefox 1.x before 1.5.0.2 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.1 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files by (1) inserting the target filename into a text box, then turning that box into a file upload control, or (2) changing the type of the input control that is associated with an event handler.
The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2006 by Claus Jørgensen (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as RHSA-2006:0328 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1729 since 04/12/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27112 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : MozillaFirefox (MozillaFirefox-1585)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115354 (Mozilla SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
