A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function crypto.generateCRMFRequest. Unspecified vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5.0.2 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors related to the crypto.generateCRMFRequest method.
The weakness was presented 04/13/2006 by Georgi Guninski (shutdown) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as RHSA-2006:0328 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1728 since 04/12/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1211.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115354 (Mozilla SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
