The weakness was shared 04/13/2006 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-25 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1727 since 04/12/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65608 (Ubuntu 12.10 : pam-xdg-support vulnerability (USN-1766-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
