Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 returns the Object class prototype instead of the global window object when (1) .valueOf.call or (2) .valueOf.apply are called without any arguments, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

The bug was discovered 04/13/2006. The weakness was disclosed 04/14/2006 by Georgi Guninski (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1731 since 04/12/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
