A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 1.5 (Mail Client Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function internal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by using the Object.watch method to access the "clone parent" internal function.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2006. The weakness was presented 04/14/2006 by Georgi Guninski (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1734 since 04/12/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117722 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0328)).
Upgrading to version 1.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
