A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 2.0.0.17 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing. Mozilla Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.18 and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 do not properly check when the Flash module has been dynamically unloaded properly, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SWF file that "dynamically unloads itself from an outside JavaScript function," which triggers an access of an expired memory address.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was presented 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-5013 since 11/10/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36485 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2008:0977)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165705 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla (SUSE-SA:2008:055)).
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
