A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 2.0.0.17 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Same Origin Policy. Mozilla Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.18, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.18, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 do not properly change the source URI when processing a canvas element and an HTTP redirect, which allows remote attackers to bypass the same origin policy and access arbitrary images that are not directly accessible to the attacker. NOTE: this issue can be leveraged to enumerate software on the client by performing redirections related to moz-icon.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-5012 since 11/10/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67764 (Oracle Linux 4 : thunderbird (ELSA-2008-0976)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165705 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla (SUSE-SA:2008:055)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46780), Tenable (67764), SecurityFocus (BID 32351†), OSVDB (50139†) and Secunia (SA34501†).
