Details
A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The http-index-format MIME type parser (nsDirIndexParser) in Firefox 3.x before 3.0.4, Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.18, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.13 does not check for an allocation failure, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an HTTP index response with a crafted 200 header, which triggers memory corruption and a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was released 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0017 since 12/13/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67765 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : seamonkey (ELSA-2008-0977)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119094 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2008:0978)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
