Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.7.1 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted movie file with H.264 encoding.
The weakness was presented 05/15/2012 by Luigi Auriemma (CHkr_D591) with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Apple. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0665 since 01/12/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59113 (QuickTime < 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75640), Tenable (59113), SecurityFocus (BID 53576†), OSVDB (81936†) and Secunia (SA47447†).
