A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.7.2 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing. Buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.2 on Windows allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted movie file with Sorenson encoding.
The weakness was disclosed 05/15/2012 by Damian Put (CHkr_D591) with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0669 since 01/12/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59113 (QuickTime < 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
